Understanding IS 3614:2021 and BS 476 Standards for Fire Doors in Commercial Buildings

The Evolution of Fire Door Testing in India

With the enforcement of the National Building Code (NBC) of India and the updated IS 3614:2021 (Amended 2023), fire doors are no longer treated as simple passive partitions. They are engineered life-safety barrier assemblies subjected to severe temperature rises in accordance with standard fire exposure curves.

Under both IS 3614 and British Standard BS 476 part 20 & 22, doors must maintain physical integrity—meaning no flames or hot gases can breach the leaf, frame, or perimeter clearances for periods of 60, 120, or up to 240 minutes.

Key Technical TakeawayFire doors must be tested as a complete assembled set—including frame, hinges, intumescent seals, and latches—rather than isolated components.

Integrity vs. Thermal Insulation

A crucial distinction in modern fire engineering is between 'Integrity' (the door's ability to resist burn-through and collapse) and 'Insulation' (the door's ability to limit thermal radiation on the unexposed side).

In evacuation corridors, fire escape staircases, and healthcare lift lobbies, limiting temperature rise on the safe side of the door prevents combustible materials from auto-igniting and ensures safe egress routes for occupants.

Perimeter Intumescent Smoke & Heat Seals

Standard ambient clearances (3mm to 4mm) are necessary for smooth operational swinging of metal fire doors during daily use. However, during a fire event, these clearances become high-risk channels for toxic smoke travel.

DORPRIME fire doors incorporate factory-embedded intumescent seals that activate and expand up to 20 times their volume when exposed to temperatures exceeding 150°C, locking out smoke and hot drafts completely.

Key Technical TakeawayCertified seals must be factory-fitted in precision frame recesses rather than surface-glued at the jobsite.

Hardware Reinforcement & Coordination

Fire doors must automatically self-close and latch under all circumstances. Structural steel reinforcement plates (minimum 3mm to 4mm thick) are welded inside the door leaf and frame at all hinge locations, door closer mountings, and panic bar positions to prevent hardware screw pull-out during thermal stress.
